How You Enter a Space: The Presence That Shapes Your Work
Share
Whenever I talk about surroundings, I’m not just talking about décor or whether a room is spotless. Yes, a healthy environment can support our mood, attitude, and creativity as you already know how much I love Peppercorn candles and battle‑hero music to set the tone of my workdays. Those sensory details matter!
But this drawing season taught me something deeper: every space carries the presence of the person who enters it.
Let me explain.
A room can be tidy—no dust, everything in order—yet feel lonely the moment you walk in. Or that same room, still tidy, still in order, can feel warm, inviting, and full of life depending on you show up inside it. The opposite is true too: a messy room might feel heavy to one person and wildly inspiring to another.
So yes, our surroundings matter. But the presence we bring…our pace, our posture, our emotional tone all shapes the space just as much.
And this design cycle made that impossible to ignore.
The Presence You Bring Shapes the Work You Create During my drawing season, I learned something about myself: at first, I love drawing late into the night. I can’t get enough of it. The ideas flow, the colors feel alive, and I’m almost obsessed with finishing “just one more” design. It feels electric!
But then I tank.
My presence shifts. My clarity drops. My body starts whispering, “You need rest.” Some people thrive at midnight. I don’t. My presence in the room at 1 a.m. becomes tired and foggy, and I don’t want that to show up in my work.
I also learned that movement matters. Stretching, walking, exercising—these weren’t “nice to haves.” They were part of how I reset my presence before starting another design. Some pieces take me three hours. Others take twenty‑six. And in that window, I’m still running a business: eating, paying bills, fulfilling orders, managing inventory, cleaning up after myself.
There’s the surrounding…the room, the desk, the tools. And then there’s the presence…the mindset, the posture, the emotional tone I bring with me.
Both shape the work.
This season taught me that presence is part of the creative process. It’s part of the business. It’s part of the outcome.
The Takeaway Our surroundings aren’t just rooms, digital spaces, or the company we keep. They’re also the presence we bring into those spaces—the way we show up to create, design, innovate, or help.
Presence shows up in the work. You can see it in craftsmanship. You can feel it in quality. You can sense it in effort.
We’ve all seen projects where someone didn’t bring their best presence and the result reflected it. Not because they lacked talent, but because their energy, their tone, their posture wasn’t aligned with the work.
Presence can elevate a space. Presence can drain a space. Presence can transform a space. And that transformation begins with awareness.
So, here’s your question for today:
What’s one thing you’ll start doing to notice how you enter a space—and how your presence shapes the work you create?
