The Art of Space: How to Make Your Surroundings Spark Creativity

When I lived with my parents, older sister, and younger brother…I painted in the bathroom. Yes, you read that right!

With two curious cats who loved to play with paintbrushes and dip their paws into my paints, painting in my bedroom was out of the question. If I locked them out, they’d cry at the door. My closet? Too small—even my clothes barely fit. And painting outside? Texas heat said, “Not today.” So, I turned to the only space left: the bathroom.

It wasn’t just any bathroom—it was shared with my sister, which meant frequent interruptions. I’d set my canvas on the sink, sit on a bench with my knees pressed against the cabinet doors, and paint. It was cramped, inconvenient, and oddly magical. In those late-night painting sessions, I discovered something profound: even the smallest, most unconventional space can fuel creativity.

Transforming a Bathroom into a Creative Sanctuary

Was it just a bathroom? No—it became my getaway. I swapped out the potpourri spray for vanilla-scented candles. I cleaned the floors, polished the sink, and tucked away lotions and face wash to clear the countertop. With my headphones on, I entered my own creative universe.

Before stepping into that space, I made two key decisions:
1. Accept the “right now” space. I knew this wasn’t my forever studio—it was temporary. Instead of thinking “it’s too small,” I reframed it: “Yes, it’s small, but I get to be closer to my art—literally.”

2. Move with the art. Tight quarters didn’t mean small movements. I stood, sat, twisted, and turned. I tilted the canvas sideways, upside down, all around. I danced with my brushstrokes. I moved with my art.

How to Make Any Space Inspire You

No matter your space, the key is intention. Here are a few ways to make your surroundings work for you:

1. Infuse your favorite color. Paint an accent wall, light a candle in your favorite hue, or lay down a cozy rug. Even the brand of tools you use can add personality. Color is a powerful mood enhancer.

2.
Tidy up. Yes, “organized chaos” is a thing—but clutter can cloud creativity. Toss what you don’t need, organize your shelves, and keep essentials within reach. Whether you’re woodworking or baking, a clean space helps you focus.

3. Make it feel alive. Surround yourself with visuals that spark joy and motivation. Hang up photos, pin a vision board, or display inspiring quotes. Let your space reflect your dreams and remind you why you create.

4. Find your unique nook. I once met a woman who wrote her novel in her closet after her kids went to bed. She said the close quarters helped her zero in—no dishes, no distractions. Maybe you thrive in open spaces, like a breezy patio or a garage with music playing. Whatever it is, choose a space that helps you tune in and create with purpose.

Creativity Lives Where You Let It

Gone are the days of painting in the bathroom—now I have a study room turned studio. But funny enough, in that larger space, I don’t move with my art the way I used to. It’s made me crave that closeness again. So if I’m not in my studio…check the bathroom. You just might find me there.
